The Old Palace of the Romanian National Bank built between 1884 and 1890 by the architects Cassien Bernard, who also built the Alexander III Bridge over the Seine (in Paris), and Albert Galleron, who created the plans for the Romanian Athenaeu, was considered “the most beautiful building in Bucharest” by architect Ion Mincu.

The Palace impresses through its monumentality, regularity, distinction and size.

It is the first important bank building in Bucharest, the most imposing building of a financial institution, which can be compared with other great constructions of the time in European capitals.

The Palace was built on the ruins of an old inn, built between 1678 and 1688. A small part of these ruins was unearthed and can now be seen through a glass floor in front of the NBR Palace.

The Old Palace of the National Bank of Romania also hosts the Museum of the National Bank of Romania.

Behaind of the Palace is  the new wing of the Bank, built during the Second World War, in the neo-classical style, with impressive monumental stairs, granite Corinthian columns, which form the façade.

The impressive buildings are running between the streets Doamnei, Smardan, Lipscani and Eugeniu Carada.  Eugeniu Carada was de governor who suprvisited the construction of the Palace.
